Education

Everyday I have these great ideas for a blog, but by the time I get home I'm so wiped I can hardly think. So I figured today, on my semi-day off and while my wonderful husband is cooking breakfast, I would tell you WHY I'm so wiped when I get home: I teach.

Two grades, 7th and 9th, two subjects (this year at least). I'm certified in biology, which allows me to teach nearly every science between 6-12 grade. Except chemistry (YAY--I hate chemistry) and physics (booo... I like physics and could totally teach it).

Our schedule is pretty hectic this year. Middle school is still on regular schedule, so for all of you non-parents or non-students out there, it means I keep each class for about 50 minutes. High school, on the other hand is on modified block schedule--90 minute blocks, and you see each class every other day. So in the morning I teach four classes of middle schoolers and each afternoon I teach a different block of high schoolers. That equals me being exhausted every single day. No really. Even today, I'm exhausted.

And you know what else? Not that I'm really complaining because I like my school and my students (most of them), but I'm chaperoning a dance tonight. So my day off is not really a full day off, because I have to go watch little kids pretend to dance (which is all they really do at the middle school level). We're required to go to three dances/functions at our school a year, so I figured--why not do this one? It's not like I'm ever going to FEEL like going to any of them, not with this schedule.

BTW--for those of you who don't teach--I spent $122 bucks this week buying candy for my students to do a lab with, and then have enough left over to eat. So... teaching is expensive, and most of those cute activities your kids do comes from the wallet of their teacher.

Now, since I have that out of my system, maybe I can finally write that blog about Annie Lennox I've been wanting to write--I love Annie. :D

Chili's

Tonight my husband and I, along with my parents and friends (Maddie and Will), went to eat at Chili's in honor of my friend Jenna Fabre and her daughter Sianna Paddie.

On Friday, May 13, 2011 Jenna and Sianna were involved in a tragic car accident that took Jenna's life and severely injured her five year old daughter, Sianna. Since that time, I have kept up with Sianna's status--her constant, miraculous improvements, and I feel like going to this benefit is the least I can do to honor my friendship, however brief it was, with her mother.

Jenna and I met in college on my freshmen year and later were room mates in Europe for three weeks. I liked her a lot. So when I heard about the accident, I was very upset. I've tried to keep her with Sianna's progress because like I said earlier, I figured it's the least I can do.

Anyway, the six of us went to Chili's tonight and we enjoyed dinner very much. Dad and Will went off on their military rants (but it was funny) and together conspired to solve all of the world's problems. Maddie and I shared a dessert. We had a great time. And hopefully, Jenna's little girl will benefit from the great time we had.

Beginning...

So I'm writing a new blog... this is the beginning.

I love to blog, but I'd kinda gotten out of the habit of it after I graduated from college and moved back in with my parents, who still think dial-up qualifies as internet. Now I'm married and live in a house with my tech-savvy husband, who insists on nothing but the best wi-fi. So back to blogging it is.

Not much to say right now: a bit about me--married, like I said. Mid-twenties. Live in the southern United States. Work as a middle and high school science teacher. I like my job, mostly. But my husband thinks it stresses me out too much and would secretly like me to quit. If I ever do quit teaching, I'm going back to college to get a masters or PhD. I want to teach always. Just maybe at a little higher level. And I like to do research, too. My favorite memories from college involve me either a)with a huge stack of books on the 3rd floor of our library, by myself at night, handwriting on college ruled looseleaf some 10-20 page research paper or b)up to my elbows in test tubes and centrifuges while I helped my biology professor do genetic research over the course of one summer. Those were the good times. :D

I suppose I am a nerd. I like to think of it as 'academic.' I married an electrical and computer engineer, and my husband is probably about three times smarter than I am. Now he can be the nerd. :D
